Help Me Make a Difference For Babies March 18, 2008

Next month, I am participating in the March of Dimes “March for Babies” walk. I’m sure most people are familiar with the March of Dimes and the important work they do, funding research to help find the causes of birth defects and more recently, premature birth.

The March of Dimes is working to help every baby get the best chance possible for a healthy start to life. If you would like more information, you can visit the March of Dimes website.

I have a personal page where anyone who is interested may sponsor me. All of the money goes directly to the March of Dimes, and even $1 can help make a difference for premature and gravely ill babies. If you’re interested, please drop me a comment or an e-mail and I will send you the link to the page (it contains personal information, so I am not linking it here). Please remember not to post your personal information in your comment!

If you can’t contribute money, there are other ways to help!

You can sign up to walk yourself. You can tell friends and family about the March of Dimes and ask them to contribute. You can ask your parents or school about forming a team of walkers for the March of Dimes. Any contribution to this organization is helping babies. I think that’s a worthwhile cause!

Thank you!

  1. Just a thought, but one way to help make a difference is to challenge the goals of the March of Dimes and underlying assumptions that drive those goals. Ridding the world of people with birth defects is not a neutral goal, but one laden with prejudice and unchallenged beliefs about people with labels of disability. And, curiously enough, its about our own assumptions of normalcy. So, making a difference might actually mean rethinking long help beliefs and then acting on our fresh perspectives in ways that truly save lives and enact community.

    Candee,

While I understand what you’re saying about not wanting to promote a culture that dehumanizes people with a disability, I respectfully disagree with the notion that supporting an organization like the March of Dimes is doing so.

However, thank you for your perspective. You did make some good points, and I am considering posting more about this on my other blog, as this one is mainly for some younger visitors. I will drop by your blog and leave you a comment soon so you have the link. I would be very interested to hear more from you. :)
